Phragmipedium besseae ''Special Compact type From Peru''
Phragmipedium besseae originates from Ecuador and the area of San Martin in Peru and was discovered in 1981. In nature, this plant grows on partly shady, moist river banks or moist granite rocks. In the natural environment this plant is exposed to the early morning sun.
This orchid becomes up to 22 cm with elongated leaves of 15 to 25 cm. The petals and skewers are bright red and turn to the core to yellow. The flowers appear one by one and have a diameter of 4 to 6 cm. Flowering can take place any time of the year, although this usually takes place in the spring. A large plant can be in bloom for up to 3 months.
This plant is fairly difficult to grow and therefore needs sufficient light and the correct substrate and water. It is best to give this plant osmosis water. The substrate must be constantly moist and therefore this plant is often placed in a bowl of water.
This plant prefers to get on average light 16 hours a day. When they receive less light, the color will be less bright. However, too little light is always better than too much light. Hot light level must be built up because sudden increase can ensure that the plant stands still. With too much light, the plant could burn.
The ideal temperature for this plant is 26-27 ° C during the day and at night15-17 ° C. In the house, however, this orchid can be cooler and temperatures are advised from 21-27 ° C with a decrease of 10 ° C at night. This prevents rapid dehydration.
The humidity must be constantly high between 70 and 90%. Sufficient air circulation is also needed to prevent diseases. A fan can be used for this.
As a substrate it is best to use a mix of bark and sphagnum moss. The pot mix must be able to retain a large amount of moisture. We use a mixture of bark and peat for this plant. This plant can best be repotted in early spring.
This plant has a high nutritional need. Moreover, fertilization promotes the color of the flowers. During the active growth period, the plant must be fertilized every 1 or 2 weeks. During the winter period the water gift, humidity and fertilization can be limited.
Rotten leaves must be removed immediately.
