Description:
The Anthurium crystallinum "Silver Queen" has more silver in its leaf than the greener version that is better known as the Anthurium crystallinum.
The Anthurium crystallinum is a striking beauty belonging to the arum (Araceae) family and has its roots in the rainforest in Central to South America, from Panama to Peru. This very rare Anthurium crystallinum looks very much like its beautiful and slightly less rare sister, the Anthurium clarinervium. However, there are a number of differences between the two. The Anthurium crystallinum grows faster than most of its relatives! The leaves of the crystallinum are more pointed and have a bright green colour, in contrast to the dark leaves of the clarinervium.
Given its origins, it prefers a location with a temperature that is at least higher than 16°C. In the rainforest, this fantastic plant grows as an epiphyte, climbing up against other plants with the help of air roots. These air roots also help the plant to obtain nutrients through air and (rain) water. It therefore lives literally and figuratively in the shadow of the plants around it. When this plant is placed indoors, this will not be the case: it is a true eye-catcher.
In order to grow well, it is important that this beautiful plant receives plenty of indirect light. Direct sunlight will damage and burn the leaves. Be careful not to place the plant too close to a heating or air conditioning system, as this can attract vermin. The top of the soil should be allowed to dry out before giving new water, as with other plants belonging to the arum family. And like all epiphytes, this beautiful plant likes an airy soil that allows sufficient air and water to pass through.
Anthuriums do not require much special care and can therefore be kept indoors. They do well in moist and warmer conditions and will reward the right care by producing beautiful flowers.
