The name Philodendron is derived from the Greek words 'philo' (love) and 'dendron' (tree). This classic plant is one of the most popular indoor plants. Besides being easy to maintain, the Philodendron is an air-purifying plant.
The Philodendron Mamei originally comes from Ecuador. This Philodendron has large green leaves, accentuated by a silver pattern. The deep veins give it an extra beautiful effect. The leaf stalks have a graceful wavy edge and are reddish-green in colour with very subtle white stripes. This unusual decoration is an absolute feast for the eyes!
This is a creeping Philodendron, not a climber. The growth rate and leaf colour of Philodendron Mamei can vary greatly, depending on the substrate, sunlight, temperature and other factors.
There are about 400 species of Philodendron, a member of the arum family (Araceae). The plant was first described in 1644, but did not receive an official name until 1829. The Philodendron family is a large one, with plants of various shapes, sizes and colours. Philodendrons can be divided into two basic categories: climbing and non-climbing plants. The non-climbing plants are sometimes found in nature high up in trees. If a seed germinates in the hollow of a high branch, the plant is able to supply itself with sufficient nutrients and water through its roots.
The Philodendron is particularly effective in helping to purify the air we breathe. To benefit from its air-purifying properties, you can place at least one Philodendron on every 10 m² and let it do what it does naturally.
Just like other Araceae, this Philodendron can be kept as an indoor plant. This plant prefers a permeable soil that should be kept evenly moist but never wet.
Philodendron mamei grows best when it is provided with bright filtered sunlight. Philodendron mamei can cope better with a lot of shade than other houseplants. However, you will notice that it will grow slower.
Philodendron plants can be kept in an ambient temperature of 15°C - 25°C. Make sure to avoid cold temperatures. Make sure that cold temperatures are avoided.
Philodendrons grow very well in a pot. However, do leave enough room for growth. Remember the looser the roots, the bigger and healthier your plant will be. When the plant becomes root-bound, its growth will slow down. At that moment it is time for a bigger pot. You can give the plant diluted fertiliser as a feed now and then. This will stimulate the growth of the plant.
